Young Teens Beware, Employers and Universities Are Watching Your Social Media Presence. /young-teens-beware-employers-and-universities-are-watching-your-social-media-presence/ /young-teens-beware-employers-and-universities-are-watching-your-social-media-presence/#comments_reply Wed, 11 Oct 2017 22:35:21 +0000 /?p=5481

In June 2017, Harvard University revealed that after discovering the existence and contents of an explicit group chat, Harvard administrators revoked admissions offers to at least ten prospective members of the Class of 2021.

Analyzing an applicant’s social media presence- profile and postings is a common practice in companies across the world when hiring their employees. One should not be surprised when he came to know that his employer has checked his Facebook posts for the day of question if has taken excess sick leave.

Teenagers are among the biggest consumers of social media. Teens can access an unlimited number of people on any given site and may find support and a sense of community. But they can also encounter the opposite. Cyberbullying and harassment are widespread on social media platforms and can contribute to feelings of low self-esteem, depression, and powerlessness.

Here are some statistics:

  • 92% of teens go online daily, and 24% say they go online “almost constantly.”
  • 76% of teens use social media (81% of older teens, 68% of teens ages 13 and 14).
  • 76%  of teens (age 13-17) use Instagram, 75% use Snapchat, 66% use Facebook, 47% use Twitter, and fewer than 30% use Tumblr, Twitch, or LinkedIn.
  • 77% of parents say their teens get distracted by their devices and don’t pay attention when they’re together.
  • 59% of parents say they feel their teen is addicted to their mobile device.
  • 50% of teens say they feel addicted to their mobile device.

No student is expected to be perfect but it is important that they are thinking about how their activity on social media represents them. There are few things that you can do as a parent to make sure that their social media posts today will not negatively affect their education or job prospects in the future.

Understand privacy settings

If your teen is on Facebook encourage them to view their profile page as a member of the public, and ask a friend of family member to go to their page and look for anything that could misinterpreted. This should be done regularly as Facebook privacy settings auto-update on a regular basis; students who think they have their profile settings set to the highest possible privacy could be showing their every move without even knowing.

Use the Parent Test

Students should think about how their mom and dad would feel if they saw a certain post or picture. If student know that your parent would not approve, then it is likely a university or employer would not either, and it does not need to be on Facebook.

Look over old posts

Parents can encourage their child to briefly but effectively search any posts they have put online in the past year, and take down anything that may seem negative or that may be a misrepresentation of them.

Google Search

Your teen should google themselves before applying to a school or job. This will help parent to show their teen just how quick another person can locate their child’s personal information.

Some other ways to help your teen be smart on social media are to be proactive about creating a positive online presence, be aware of what their friends are posting, and encourage them to vent in person and not online.

Let our teens know that while some of social media communication can be positive, allowing teenagers to explore their own identity development and find a sense of belonging, it can also get teens in trouble.

Best route to a Canadian University: Canadian Pre-University Program /best-route-to-a-canadian-university-canadian-pre-university-program/ /best-route-to-a-canadian-university-canadian-pre-university-program/#comments_reply Tue, 03 Oct 2017 18:44:56 +0000 /?p=5434

Be smart and choose right

Canadian Pre-University Program at Millennium eAcademy is one of the best pathway programs for international students who seek admission to a world renowned University in Canada or any other western country. The program will give international students fast and guaranteed admission to Canada’s top universities. This program is carefully developed to exceed the curriculum and learning expectations of Ontario Ministry of Education. Students can enroll and complete their courses in the Canadian Pre-University Program if they have met their prerequisite requirements of the CPU. International students will get Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) credits for high school work completed in their home countries.

Duration of CPU program

Duration of the program will be one year long. Duration depends on the number of credits that a student has to complete to obtain the diploma. Each student will be required to meet entry requirements of the CPU program and will be assessed based on their educational qualifications. Therefore, number of courses required to complete the CPU program will vary for each student.

Graduation from CPU program

Students who successfully complete CPU Program will be awarded Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) which is an entry qualification to enter to Undergraduate studies in a university in North America. CPU program is designed and developed with curriculum of Ontario Ministry of Education, Canada.

In order to complete your CPU program and earn your Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), you should complete

  • Required number of compulsory and optional credits
  • Required number of community involvement hours
  • The provincial secondary literacy requirement

Required number of credits and community involvement hours will be determined in the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR).

For registration, students either can contact our international admission office: [email protected] or our partner learning institutions.

What you should know if you are Applying to Waterloo Engineering-2018 /what-you-should-know-if-you-are-applying-to-waterloo-engineering-2018/ /what-you-should-know-if-you-are-applying-to-waterloo-engineering-2018/#comments_reply Tue, 26 Sep 2017 04:01:40 +0000 /?p=5409

Waterloo Engineering is one of the most competitive undergraduate programs to get admissions. Waterloo Engineering is one of the world’s best universities for Engineering and Technology in 2017. It ranks number two among Canadian Universities in the same category.

Due to the ranking, reputation, graduate employability and Engineering CO-OP program has made it one of the most competitive undergraduate programs to get admissions.

You must understand the entry requirements and plan ahead if you want to get admission from Waterloo Engineering. Don’t miss any deadline of the applications process.

There are few things to remember in your Waterloo Engineering:

  1. Apply through OUAC
  2. Check whether you have met the language requirements
  3. Complete and submit AIF (Admission Information Form) on time
  4. Complete and submit online video interview

You will hardly get an offer if you don’t submit the AIF which will ask you to explain about your interests, awards, extra-curricular activities, employment experience, and any other significant things about yourself. Optional online video interview is recent addition to Waterloo Engineering application process and you will be able tell more about you during the online video interview. During the online video interview, when the question is asked, you will be given prep time, and allotted a set amount of time to respond. According to Waterloo Engineering, it may take about 20 to 30 minutes to complete the online interview.

“The selection of candidates for Waterloo Engineering is done based on an “Admission Score”” according to Professor Bill Anderson of University of Waterloo. The Admission Average is calculated by summing up the admission average, AIF score, adjustment factor and video interview points. Admission average is the average of the six required courses. Student’s AIF will contribute up to five points to the admission score. Adjustment factor is calculated based on historical data of performance of students in the faculty.

Good grades for the required subjects in the first attempt may be helpful to get a good admission score. If the marks of second attempt is to be taken for admission average calculation, “we will use the second grade but deduct 5 points off the admission score, unless there are extenuating circumstances.” According to Professor Anderson.

Not only it is important to get good grades, but also there must be a consistency since the university further makes adjustments for unusual high marks.

Applying to University: Free tuition for Ontario Students from September 2017 /applying-to-university-free-tuition-for-ontario-students-from-september-2017/ /applying-to-university-free-tuition-for-ontario-students-from-september-2017/#comments_reply Wed, 30 Aug 2017 01:53:24 +0000 /?p=5383 Your child may be in the first group of students who get “free tuition” if he or she is starting College or University September 2017. With introduction of new “OSAP” by the Ontario government, it was stated that more than 210,000 students will be eligible to get “free tuition” if their family income, in general, is less than $50,000.

What does “free tuition” mean?

According to the Ontario government, “Free average tuition” means a student will receive OSAP grants that will equal or exceed

  • the actual tuition for an arts and science undergraduate program in a university in Ontario;
  • the average tuition for a high cost undergraduate program in a university, such as Engineering; or
  • the average tuition for a regular college diploma program across the province.

These changes will ensure that many students from families with income of $50,000 or lower will receive grants that exceed their tuition fee.

Will children from middle-income families benefit from new OSAP?

Children from middle income families will also find that they may be eligible to receive more financial assistance from the government through 30% off Ontario Tuition Grant.

Student will be eligible to get the 30% off Ontario Tuition Grant, if

  • Student is a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person.
  • Student is an Ontario resident.
  • One of the following statements applies to the student:
    • It’s been less than four years since the student left high school.
    • It’s been less than six years since the student left high school and student have a permanent disability.
    • It’s been more than four years, but less than five years since student left high school and student is in a five year co-op program (i.e., a co-op program that contains no less than eight academic study periods and one or more work terms, which combined are more than four years in length).
  • Parents of student’s combined gross income is $160,000 or less.
  • Student is a full-time undergraduate student at a public university or college in Ontario or a private postsecondary school in Ontario that is approved for OSAP purposes.
  • Student is in a program that student can apply to directly from high school.
  • Student is not restricted from receiving an Ontario Student Loan (e.g., Student is not in default or have an academic restriction).

How about Mature students or Married students or Students with children?

The new OSAP program is available for all eligible students who are enrolled in OSAP approved full time programs. Students include dependent students, mature single students, married students, students with children.

What are the benefits of “New Ontario Student Grant”?

New OSAP has consolidated a number of existing OSAP grants into a single up-front grant, the Ontario Student Grant (OSG), starting 2017-2018 academic year.

Under the new Ontario Student Grant (OSG):

  • Average tuition will be free for students with financial need from families with incomes of $50,000 or less
  • No Ontario student will receive less than they are currently eligible for through the 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant (OTG)

In addition, new OSAP will:

  • Increase Ontario weekly assistance maximum levels to $450 per week for individuals, and married and sole-support parents
  • Expand financial support for mature and married students. Eligibility for grant support will no longer be tied to the number of years a student has been out of high school.
  • Reduce the amount a student’s spouse is expected to contribute
  • Increase access to interest-free and low-cost loans for middle- and upper-income families by reducing expected parental contributions

Will the student get OSAP if he or she enroll in a private institution?

Student may get OSAP funding, if the student enroll in a OSAP-approved program in a private career college or a private intuition while student meets all other OSAP eligibility requirements.

How can I apply and where can I apply?

Students can apply to OSAP online. A new online calculator has been launched by the Ontario Government at www.Ontario.ca/osap to allow students to find out instantly whether they qualify for free tuition or other grants from the province.
